Josh Brolin has spent decades in Hollywood, but behind his successful career lies a childhood filled with experiences that were anything but ordinary. In his memoir From Under the Truck<\/em>, the actor opens up about the difficult moments that helped shape the person he eventually became.<\/p>\n Growing up, Brolin and his brother Jess lived with their mother, Jane, a wildlife conservationist. Their childhood on a California ranch was unconventional and sometimes frightening. Jane had an unusual way of dealing with her sons, including allowing them to experience the dangers of the wild firsthand. Brolin has described being chased by animals such as coyotes, cougars, and bobcats after his mother encouraged them to pursue the boys.<\/p>\n Although those memories may sound terrifying to outsiders, Brolin has said that he does not simply view his mother through a negative lens. Despite her unpredictable behavior, he remembers her as a powerful, colorful presence in his life and someone whose personality had a lasting influence on him.<\/p>\n His childhood also exposed him to alcohol and drugs at an extremely young age. Brolin has recalled trying marijuana when he was only nine and experimenting with LSD at thirteen. Jane died in a car accident in 1995 at the age of 55. During the darkest period of his addiction, Brolin had convinced himself that reaching 55 was already a long enough life. Eventually, however, he realized how misguided that belief had been.<\/p>\n Brolin’s relationship with his famous stepmother, Barbra Streisand, also played an important role in his journey. After Streisand married his father, James Brolin, she became known to Josh for her direct and uncompromising honesty. Rather than ignoring his drinking problem, she confronted him about it openly.<\/p>\n One memorable exchange occurred when Brolin asked for a glass of wine. Streisand responded by questioning whether he was an alcoholic and telling him that he should not be drinking. Brolin later explained that he appreciated her honesty, even when it was difficult to hear.<\/p>\n His addiction continued for years, but eventually he reached a point where he knew he had to change. In 2013, after visiting his grandmother while intoxicated as she lay dying, Brolin realized that he did not want alcohol to control the rest of his life. That experience became a decisive moment, and he stopped drinking.<\/p>\n By the time he reached 56, Brolin had spent more than a decade sober. Looking back, he said he genuinely enjoys life without alcohol and has learned to appreciate getting older rather than fearing it.<\/p>\n At the same time, his professional career continued to flourish.
