\nOne of the early figures to challenge conventional swimwear was Australian swimmer Annette Kellerman.<\/p>\n

In 1907, Kellerman appeared in a one-piece swimsuit that exposed her arms, legs, and neck \u2014 areas that traditional bathing costumes were designed to conceal. Her outfit was considered shocking by the standards of the time.<\/p>\n

Kellerman, who became known as the \u201cAustralian Mermaid,\u201d was not simply a swimmer. She was also an outspoken figure who challenged traditional ideas about women’s appearance and athleticism.<\/p>\n

Kellerman later said she had been arrested because of her swimsuit, although historical records do not definitively confirm the arrest. Regardless, the controversy surrounding her appearance helped draw attention to the idea that women needed swimwear that allowed them greater freedom of movement.<\/p>\n
