Born on February 29, 1960, in El Paso, Texas, he was the youngest of five children in a Mexican immigrant family.<\/p>\n

From the outside, his childhood appeared to be a fairly ordinary working-class upbringing in the American Southwest. But inside the family home, life was much more troubled.<\/p>\n

His father was a violent alcoholic who frequently lost his temper, leading to repeated physical abuse.<\/p>\n

Years later, a massive police manhunt unfolded, becoming one of the largest in California\u2019s history. Detectives Frank Salerno and Gil Carrillo headed the investigation, working tirelessly to connect a series of crimes occurring across different jurisdictions.<\/p>\n

The crucial breakthrough came from an unlikely witness: a teenager.<\/p>\n

On August 24, 1985, 13-year-old James Romero III was still awake late at night at his home in Mission Viejo when he heard unusual noises outside. Looking out, he noticed a suspicious man nearby and watched him leave in an orange Toyota.<\/p>\n

James carefully remembered the vehicle\u2019s make, model, color, and part of its license plate number. Those details would later become extremely important to investigators.<\/p>\n

Four days later, on August 28, the stolen Toyota was discovered abandoned in Los Angeles\u2019 Koreatown. Although the suspect had apparently tried to clean the vehicle, investigators managed to recover a single fingerprint from the rearview mirror.<\/p>\n

The fingerprint was eventually identified as belonging to a 25-year-old drifter who already had a record involving traffic violations and drug-related offenses.<\/p>\n

On August 29, 1985, police released his photograph to the media. During a press conference, authorities made it clear that they had identified their suspect and that hiding would no longer be an option.<\/p>\n

The man they were searching for was Richard Ramirez.<\/p>\n

On August 30, 1985, he boarded a bus heading to Tucson, Arizona. The following morning, he returned to Los Angeles, unknowingly walking past police officers who were watching the bus terminal.<\/p>\n
