Many parents love capturing precious moments with their newborns and sharing those memories with friends and family.<\/p>\n

Patricia Williams was no different when she photographed her baby boy, Redd.<\/p>\n

However, after sharing his pictures online, the family faced an unexpected and hurtful reaction.<\/p>\n

Redd was born in 2012 with striking white hair. When he was around two months old, Patricia and her husband, Dale, began noticing that his eyes moved from side to side. After looking into the possible cause, Dale discovered that the unusual eye movement could be linked to albinism.<\/p>\n

The couple had never heard much about the condition, but Redd showed several characteristics commonly associated with it, including very pale skin, white hair, and unusual eye movements.<\/p>\n

They took him to an optometrist and genetic specialists, who eventually confirmed that Redd had Oculocutaneous Albinism Type 1 (OCA1), a rare genetic condition affecting approximately 1 in 17,000 people worldwide.<\/p>\n

As Redd grew older, he faced bullying at school because of his appearance. His older brother, Gage, became especially protective of him. By the time another child, Rockwell, joined the family, Patricia and Dale were much more familiar with albinism and knew how to support their children.<\/p>\n

Still, nothing prepared them for what happened when one of their son’s photographs was turned into an internet meme.<\/p>\n

At first, Patricia and Dale contacted people who had shared the image and asked them to remove it. Eventually, they realized they could not keep up with everyone who had reposted it, so they decided to stop engaging with the situation.<\/p>\n

Years later, the family’s experience took a much more positive turn. On April 28, 2023, Patricia shared a video of Rockwell during his school’s \u201cWestern Day.\u201d Instead of ridicule, the post received an overwhelming amount of kindness and praise. People described the young boy as \u201ccute\u201d and \u201cadorable.\u201d<\/p>\n

Patricia has also worked to correct common misconceptions about albinism, including the belief that everyone with the condition has red eyes. She explained that many people with albinism can have very light blue eyes because of the reduced amount of pigment in their eyes.<\/p>\n
