Why People Stick Cloves Into an Onion: The Traditional Kitchen Trick That Still Works Today

For generations, home cooks have relied on simple kitchen traditions that have been passed down through families, and one of the most recognizable is pressing whole cloves into a peeled onion. While it may look unusual at first, this classic technique has remained popular because of the subtle but important difference it makes in many recipes.

The reason is simple: the cloves gently infuse the onion with their warm, aromatic flavor while making them easy to remove later.

Instead of scattering loose cloves throughout a soup, stew, or sauce, cooks can lift out the entire onion once it has finished releasing its flavor. This prevents anyone from accidentally biting into a whole clove, which has an intensely strong taste.

According to the fictional story, an experienced grandmother taught this trick to every new cook in her family. She believed that the best recipes were often built on small details, and this method became one of her signature techniques whenever she prepared homemade soups, broths, creamy sauces, or slow-cooked dishes for family gatherings.

The combination works especially well because onions naturally become sweet as they cook, while cloves add a warm, slightly spicy aroma that enhances the overall flavor without overpowering the dish. The onion also acts as a convenient holder for the cloves, keeping everything together throughout the cooking process.

Although modern kitchens offer countless gadgets and shortcuts, this traditional onion-and-clove method continues to prove its value. It’s a simple, practical trick that adds depth of flavor, makes cleanup easier, and reminds us that some of the oldest cooking techniques are still among the most effective.
