Spotting an unfamiliar insect inside your home can be unsettling, especially when it has a long body and a pair of curved pincers at the end of its abdomen.

Many people immediately assume it is dangerous, but appearances can be deceiving. This insect is commonly known as an earwig, and despite its intimidating look, it is usually harmless to people.

Earwigs are attracted to damp, dark environments where they can hide during the day. They are often found in bathrooms, basements, kitchens, laundry rooms, garages, or near doors and windows after periods of wet weather. Finding one or two indoors doesn’t necessarily indicate a major infestation, but it can be a sign that your home has areas with excess moisture or easy entry points.

These insects primarily feed on decaying plant material, fungi, and smaller insects, although they may occasionally nibble on soft fruits or flowers outdoors. The pincers at the back of their bodies are mainly used for defense and mating rather than attacking people. While they may pinch if handled, they are not venomous and are not known to spread diseases.

If earwigs begin appearing regularly, it’s a good idea to reduce moisture around the home by fixing leaks, improving ventilation, and removing piles of damp leaves or mulch near the foundation. Sealing cracks around doors, windows, and utility openings can also help prevent them from wandering inside.

Although they may look alarming, earwigs are generally more of a nuisance than a threat. Keeping your home dry, clean, and well-sealed is usually enough to discourage them and reduce the chances of seeing them indoors.
