An armed man wielding a shotgun was shot and killed by U.S. Secret Service agents and local police early Sunday morning after he breached a secure perimeter at Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida, officials said.
The individual was identified as 21-year-old Austin Tucker Martin from North Carolina and had been reported missing a few days earlier.
The incident comes amid a surge in political violence in the United States; last year, a gunman fired at a candidate during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania, and another man was found near a Florida golf course with a semi-automatic rifle.
Federal authorities have not announced a motive as investigators continue working to determine the suspect’s intent and whether anyone else may have been involved.
